Why you will love this French Toast Recipe
- budget friendly with simple ingredients
- Makes a great freezer breakfast
- Very easy to scale up to make a large batch
Ingredients in Easy French Toast
- Bread: really, any kind of bread works. To get fancy use brioche, cinnamon bread or anything thick and crusty works great to soak up all the egg. I many times just use the plain white bread I grab from Sara Lee or Kwik Star, too.
- I say, as a guide, this recipe makes 6 slices of French toast–this will depend widely on the size and thickness of bread you have!
- Milk: I use whatever percentage I have on hand.
- Egg: 3 large. I would grab extra just in case, though. The amount of egg to bread ratio really depends on the size and thickness of bread you have.
- Cinnamon: ground cinnamon.
- Vanilla Extract: any kind works.
- Optional: add powdered sugar, fruit, syrup, honey, etc.
How to make French Toast on the Griddle
Easy way to make French Toast on the Griddle!
- Prepare
Preheat the electric griddle to 350 F. Make the egg mixture–combine egg, milk, cinnamon and vanilla. Whisk together well. The egg mixture needs to be in a large enough bowl that you can dip the bread into it.
- Dip the Bread
Spray your griddle and begin dipping both sides of the bread into the egg mixture. Don’t dip for too long or the bread will get very soggy and break!
- Cook until golden
Add the bread to the griddle and cook until golden, then flip. First side takes about 2-4 minutes, and then second side about 3 minutes. This will vary on griddle.
Enjoy!
Tools I recommend for French Toast on the Griddle
If you’re making French Toast for your family or meal prepping for the freezer, an electric griddle is a GAME CHANGER! It heats evenly, fits many slices at once, and cleans easily.
I use this electric griddle (affiliate link) and love that I can cook so many slices at once! This is a budget friendly griddle too- pretty plain. There are so many electric griddles out there! I love taking them with us when we go camping, etc. Look for one with a nonstick surface and adjustable heat settings.
Substitutions and Variations
- Bread: use any kind of bread you like. Thicker texas style or brioche make this “fancier”. A cinnamon bread is a great choice as well!
- Milk: use heavy cream, or any percentage of fat of milk. I have NOT tried oat milk or any milk substitution. I imagine it would work but would change the flavor.
- Spice: add nutmeg or other spice to your liking.
How to Reheat and Freeze French Toast
The leftovers can be stored in a couple different ways to enjoy again!
- Refrigerate: let the toast cool, and the refrigerate in an air tight container for up to 4 days.
- Freezer: French toast is VERY freezer friendly! Let the French Toast cool, and then add it to a gallon freezer bag. I like the gallon ziploc freezer brand. (Being a freezer meal business, I know what products work best for freezing!).
- I like to use parchment or wax paper in between layers so that they toast doesn’t stick together. You could also flash freeze on a sheet pan before adding to a gallon bag to help with the sticking together. I personally, forget that I’m flash freezing and then it sits in the freezer sometimes a few extra days!
- When ready to eat, just pull a slice out and warm in 30 second increments in the microwave.
Cinnamon French Toast FAQ
No. You can cook in on the stove as well. I just like the electric griddle because you can make a large batch so quick! To cook on the skillet, cook on medium-high heat.
350 F is the proper temp for French Toast on the griddle.
Absolutely. Grease with cooking spray, butter or tallow.
Yes, you can make it ahead and keep in refrigerator, or freeze it. My full freezer instructions are above!
Maybe. I have not tried substituting the milk in this recipe with a milk substitute. I think it would work but the flavor profile would change.
What Pairs well with French Toast on the Griddle
- Bacon or Sausage Links/ Patties on the griddle. Learn more about cooking bacon on the griddle. I would recommend making either the french toast or meat first, not together.
- Scrambled eggs or fried eggs! These can also be made on the griddle.
- Side of fruit- I like strawberries or blueberries
