This Dorito Taco Bake is a perfect weeknight meal for your busy family. Just ground beef, taco seasoning, sour cream, crescent rolls, mozzarella cheese and your favorite taco toppings! The Dorito bake is also freezer friendly and includes those instructions.
Ingredients for Dorito Taco Bake
Ground Beef – 1 lb of lean ground beef. I like to use 90% lean. This could be substituted with ground turkey, venison or probably ground chicken but I have not tried that. Looking for a source of lean, Iowa born & raised, dry aged ground beef? We will be selling cuts of beef at the end of 2024. Subscribe to our newsletter or checkout our beef retail site for updates.
Taco Seasoning- 2 tbsp of your favorite taco seasoning, or a taco seasoning packet. Want to make homemade taco seasoning? Check out our taco seasoning recipe. We also sell our taco seasonings on our website – we will ship it, too. We have options of a ‘sample pack’ or a large bulk jar that will make many batches of taco meat.
Sour Cream- 8 oz of sour cream, plus more if you want to top the taco Dorito casserole with sour cream after it is done baking. Both regular sour cream and a lighter blend of sour cream will work in this recipe. You could also substitute half of the sour cream for plain flavored greek yogurt.
Crescent rolls – an 8 oz can of any brand of crescent rolls. I have used both the pillsbury rolls and the ‘off brand’ rolls from Wal-Mart, Fareway, etc. These will be your ‘crust’ and spread to the bottom of the casserole dish.
Mozzarella Cheese- the best part is the cheese. I say 2 cups of mozzarella in the recipe card but anywhere from 1-2 cups will do. It just depends on how cheesy you like your Taco Dorito bake.
Doritos – last but not least! We almost always use the Nacho cheese Doritos, however the ‘cool ranch’ can easily be used as well. I have not tried any ‘off brand’ Doritos for this recipe because I have never liked the taste of the off brands before. I am looking online at Doritos now and see they have a ‘taco flavor’.. again I haven’t tried it but I am sure it would work wonderfully.
Can you freeze Taco Dorito Bake?
Absolutely! I have actually used this recipe in our freezer meal business. What you need to do is follow the instructions directly but NOT bake it. Just store in a freezer safe casserole dish for up to 3 months. Then, thaw it in fridge for at least 24 hours and follow the baking instructions. If it is not fully thawed it will take longer to bake. Another great idea is to double the ground beef you make during the recipe and freeze ground beef- it definitely would come in handy for a last minute meal like this!
Is Dorito Casserole good as leftovers?
It is. This is one of my husbands favorite dishes and we definitely eat the leftovers. With that being said, the Doritos can get soggy as leftovers. My mother-in-law mentioned that you can reheat this in the airfryer and the Doritos get crispy again- it is true! I would pop it in your air fryer for a few minutes. I have also done this with my favorite Taco Pizza from Caseys and it is a game changer.

Dorito Taco Bake
Equipment
- 1 9×13 casserole dish
- skillet for browning ground beef
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef` browned
- 2 tbsp taco seasoning or 1 packet
- 8 oz sour cream can use light
- 1 bag doritos regular size (not family)
- 1 can refrigerated crescent rolls any brand
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
- toppings lettuce, tomatoes, more sour cream, etc
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 F. Heat skillet on medium high heat and begin browning the ground beef. Drain then add the taco seasoning according to instructions (add water per instructions, too). Then add the 8 oz tub of sour cream to the ground beef mixture.
- Set beef aside. Next, Spray a casserole dish with cooking spray and then pop open the can of crescent rolls. Roll the crescent rolls out onto the sprayed pan- using your hands to 'spread' the dough out so that it evenly covers the casserole dish bottom.
- Crush the entire bag of Dorito's – you can put them in a gallon ziploc bag and crush or just crush them in the bag they are already in. Once done, evenly disperse about half the bag of Doritos on top of the crescent rolls.
- The next layer is the taco/sour cream mixture. Add all of that to the casserole dish on top of the Doritos that were sprinkled on.
- On top of the meat mixture comes the mozzarella – add 1-2 cups of shredded mozzarella (your choice- the cheesier the better in my opinion!)
- The last layer is the remaining Doritos. Add those to the top.
- Now, cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Then uncover and bake for an additional 5 minutes.
- Once done- top with your favorite taco toppings: lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream etc.
