These gooey chocolate chip cookie bars are a rich, chocolate deliciousness that will be a huge hit whatever you make them for. You cannot go wrong with a traditional chocolate chip cookie, but in bar form! These are very gooey, which sets them apart from a typical cookie or bar.
This chocolate chip cookie bar recipe is still an easy, simple, recipe, but something different than a cookie! Perfect to make with kids or a beginner baker.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar Ingredients
All Purpose Flour – any brand will work, I normally use an ‘off-brand’ like great value or fareway.
Sugar- this is a cookie recipe, so obviously sugar will be in it! This recipe uses both brown sugar and white sugar in equal amounts.
Butter – I normally used salted butter in the recipe, but unsalted would be fine too. I can’t tell a difference usually.
Oil- I have used both vegetable oil or canola oil interchangeably in this recipe. The oil is what makes these bars gooey- so don’t sub it! You could make entirely with butter but it won’t have the gooey-ness!
Eggs- use 2 large sized eggs in this recipe.
Salt, Vanilla, Baking Soda – all pretty self explanatory.
Last but most certainly not least, chocolate chips! I recommend using milk chocolate chips in this recipe because they melt best. You can use semi-sweet, but they won’t be quite as perfect. You could use half and half, too.
How to make Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars
- First, preheat oven to 325 F. Grease your baking pan.
- In a medium to large mixing bowl, cream together butter, oil and sugar. Then add in the eggs and vanilla.
- In a separate large bowl, mix together the flour, salt and baking soda.
- Add the bowl of dry ingredients to the mixing bowl of ‘wet’ ingredients. Stir together until mixed well. Next, add the chocolate chips and stir those in by hand with a rubber spatula.
- Spread cookie batter in the greased pan. Put in oven, set timer for 5 minutes.
- Once the 5 minutes is complete, take pan out and swirl the cookie batter with table knife, especially the edges of the pan. Swirl well so melted chocolate chips are mixed well.
- Put pan back in oven for 10-12 minutes until done. They will be medium brown & raised in center when done. Be careful not to overcook or they will not be as gooey!

Gooey chocolate bars are the best! Learned to be sure to wait NO longer than 5 mins to swirl or they won’t swirl easily. These are a requirement at family gatherings!
