Vinegar makes this healthy chocolate mug cake moist!
Vinegar, along with the oil, helps make this chocolate mug cake so moist. Sometimes, cakes can be dry, but not with vinegar. This article by cookindocs explains further why vinegar is a crucial ingredient in a great tasting cake. My favorite cake recipe also has vinegar in it – chocolate wacky cake recipe.
Ingredients in Healthy Chocolate Mug Cake
All Purpose Flour – any regular kind of flour will work.
Sweetener– I used Stevia. You can use regular sugar, honey or whatever sweetener you desire.
Vegetable Oil– I prefer oil over butter to help with making the cake more moist. You can use canola oil or coconut oil, too.
Vinegar – the most important ingredient! – do not skip this.
Salt, Baking Soda, Vanilla, cocoa, water – all pretty self explanatory
How to instructions
How to make chocolate mug cake
- Grease your mug/glass bowl. Add all of the dry ingredients to the mug and stir or whisk it together.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry, and mix it all well.
- Top with your 1-2 tbsp of chocolate chips.
- Bake in microwave for 1 minute, more or less.
- Top with a little whipped cream, ice cream or peanut butter. Enjoy!
Tips to make this mug cake delicious
- avoid over cooking – try cooking in 30 second increments. If you go over 1 minute of cooking- let it rest a couple minutes before adding more time. It will dry out if over cooked.
- If you want it gooey- add a bit more liquid or under cook it.
- Top with a sprinkle of sea salt or flaky salt
- Don’t forget the vinegar! This is a key ingredient for a moist cake.

Well, I think partly it is better-for-you just because it limits you to 1 serving only. The lower calorie sweetener choice also helps.
Yes it is.
You can. Replace the 2 tbsp of flour with 2 tbsp protein powder. It will be a dryer cake.

Love this mug cake for when I have a late night sweet tooth but don’t want the temptation of a full pan of cake or bars! Gives me a little satisfaction without the extra temptation! I like to add whipped cream to the top and let it melt – yum.
