Every farm has a story…
“What the HELL are you looking up here for?”
Every farm has a story. Something that dates back much farther than you and I.
If you look real close at the picture at the beginning of the post- that’s what the back of our old barn says. “What the Hell are you looking up here for?”. It’s been there longer than I have been.
As a kid, I’d be feeding calves and notice it- WHY are those words on the back of our barn?!
Turns out, the neighbor that my family bought this farm from had painted those words, Don.
But why would he write that?
Don had hunters that would come in the fall to hunt. They would give him a hard time about his barn needing a paint job- so.. what did he do?! He painted it. And by paint It , I mean he got up there and used a little bit of red paint and put, “what the hell are you looking up here for?” ..or that is how the story goes anyways!
Farms are special. They all tell a story. Someday I will tell my kids this little story, too. Even if those old words completely fade on before they are able to read. They will know it, they will learn a tidbit about our old neighbors Don & Lillian, and I hope the silly little story gets passed down to each steward of this farm.
We have talked about getting the barn painted, it could definitely use it, but it would break my heart a bit to paint over those words. Or maybe I can hope – those words will shine through even after a paint job- Kind of like Billy Bob loves Charlene?!
What the hell are you looking up here for? – a part of our farm story.
What little quirks make your home or farm what it is today? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!

Speaking of our old neighbors..
Not only did Don & Lillian used to live and own the farm I now call home- we also use one of Lillian’s recipes during the holidays- candy cane cookies. Or a version of it, anyways! It was a favorite of mine to make when I was young.

I love this story!!! And who knows, maybe red will shine through, just like John Deere green 💚
